A bird that inhabits the sandstone escarpments in the Kimberley and Ord-Victoria regions of northern West Australia and the Northern Territory, the White-quilled Rock-Pigeon is a plump ground-dwelling bird with a long tail, beautiful if subtle marking on the head, neck, and back, and a white wing patch that shows in flight. There is considerable individual variation, with some birds appearing more dusky grey and others more reddish brown; former appear to be mainly females. Juvenile closely resembles adult, but has narrow rufous margins to upperwing-coverts.
Its scientific name Petrophassa is a straightforward combination of the Greek for rock (petra) and the Greek for pigeon (phassa). Albipennis is Latin for white quilled. |
